The Lanín Volcano is one of those mountains that wakes up our thirst for adventure. At first, the 2700 m difference in altitude seems like a quite tough and long goal to achieve, but as we make our way up, the views and a good night’s sleep half-way to the top will make all those doubts go away.
Attempting the LanĂn Volcano ascent is an experience that you will treasure for the rest of your life.

Highlights of the LanĂn Volcano ascent
- Challenge yourself in an ascent through mountain slopes at night and with crampons.
- Discover unforgettable views of the starry night sky and sunrise.
- Get the chance to enjoy the privileged scenery of the northern Andes and its volcanoes.
- Enjoy the views of the Huechulafquen, PaimĂșn, and Epulafquen lakes from above.

Day before the ascent
The previous afternoon we will have a briefing with the mountain guide in charge of the ascent. We will check the equipment, discuss the final details of the program, and clear any doubts that the group members might still have.

Day 1 - "The mountain adventure begins"
We will leave San MartĂn de Los Andes at 7 am and we will head north for 100 km to the foot of the LanĂn Volcano. Upon arrival, we will register at the park rangers' office and we will begin the ascent towards the hut area (2400 m.a.s.l.). The trek is an easy and unhurried one, with a 1300-meter difference in altitude that we will sort in 4-5 hours.
Once at the huts we will rest, hydrate, and prepare for our summit attempt.
During this time we will adjust the crampons and practice different techniques to walk on ice, as well as ice axe techniques for self-arrest. The idea behind these practice sessions is that the first experience with the equipment be during the day and not at dawn, lit up by just a head-lamp. We will have dinner early and call it a day.

Day 2 - "On our way to LanĂn's summit"
If the weather is good, we will leave at about 3 am. Depending on the terrain conditions, we might have to walk over rocks during the first section of the ascent. We will then put on the equipment that will allow us to walk safely over hard-packed snow. The trekking pace is unhurried but constant, and we have to overcome 1400 meters of altitude difference to reach the top. The summit attempt takes 5-7 hours, depending on the group and the weather conditions. Once at the top we will enjoy our well-earned price.
We will then begin the descent, which is as challenging as the ascent and requires our full attention. Once back at the huts we will pick up our overnight equipment and we will continue to the foot of the mountain, where a vehicle will be waiting to drive us back to San MartĂn de Los Andes. Today is a long day that demands 10-13 hours of activity.
